Abel & Cole
RetailHow online grocer Abel & Cole used Compare Your Footprint to take ownership of their carbon accounting, reduce emissions by 7,939 tonnes in 2022, and validate science-based targets through SBTi.
Challenge
Abel & Cole partnered with Compare Your Footprint (CYF) to accurately measure and report their carbon footprint and develop a robust carbon reduction strategy. They first worked with CYF’s sister company, Green Element, to calculate their emissions and create a Climate Emergency Plan. As the Abel & Cole team’s understanding of carbon accounting grew, they chose to bring measurement in-house, using CYF’s software so they could take direct ownership of their carbon accounting and ongoing emissions management.
Solution
Abel & Cole use CYF’s platform to upload and analyse activity data across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, including site energy consumption, business travel, water, and waste. They also back-dated and uploaded historical data to achieve a clearer understanding of previous impact and year-on-year progress.
Carbon hotspots identified:
- Food and Drink (70%)
- Liquid Fuel (8%)
- Packaging (5%)
Using this data, Abel & Cole identified priority reduction areas and set science-based targets aligned to the latest climate science through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Outcome
Abel & Cole: 2022 Carbon Emissions Reduction Summary
In 2022, Abel & Cole reduced their carbon emissions by 7,939 tonnes CO₂e, equivalent to removing 1,714 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the road for one year.
Key reduction measures
- Transport & distribution
- Introduced route optimisation technology for delivery drivers to cut fuel use and emissions
- Switched inter-site transportation to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable biofuel that can emit up to 90% less fossil-derived CO₂ than conventional diesel
