How to measure emissions from Gas
Gas activity data captures the natural gas your organisation burns directly — in boilers, furnaces or gas-fired equipment — at sites you own or control. It sits in Scope 1 as direct combustion, with the extraction, processing and pipeline transport of that gas reported separately in Scope 3 Category 3. It's distinct from bottled or bulk LPG and other non-piped gases, which fall under the gaseous fuels category instead.

What counts as Gas
Gas activity data is the volume or energy content of mains natural gas combusted in equipment owned or controlled by the organisation, such as heating systems, cookers and industrial burners. It excludes gas consumed by tenants in leased-out space and excludes bottled propane, butane or other non-piped gases, which are tracked separately. Ownership follows the same operational or financial control boundary applied to the rest of your Scope 1 sources.
Gas is one of the most common Scope 1 sources for organisations with owned or controlled buildings, and it's easy to confuse with gaseous fuels, which covers everything gas-like except mains natural gas — LPG, propane and butane included. A frequent double-counting risk arises at multi-tenant or leased sites: if a landlord's meter serves several tenants, only report the share attributable to your operational control, and agree the allocation method with your landlord or agent. Gas combustion itself is Scope 1, but the upstream extraction and pipeline transport of that gas is Scope 3 Category 3 — keep these as separate line items rather than one blended total. As a reporting tip, request half-hourly or monthly meter data from your supplier rather than relying on annual estimates, since seasonal heating patterns can make annualised averages inaccurate.
How to collect the data
Gas meter readings — half-hourly, monthly or annual — from your own meters or your supplier's online portal give the most accurate m³, kWh or therm figures. Supplier invoices are a reliable fallback where you can't access the meter directly, particularly for smaller or shared sites. Where physical units aren't available, £ or $ spend on gas bills can be used, though this should be treated as a temporary measure while you build access to metered data.

- Agree an allocation method with the landlord or other tenants — commonly floor area or headcount — and document the basis so it can be repeated consistently each reporting period.
- Is gas used to heat a leased office my responsibility to report?
- If you have operational control over the space, yes — request consumption data from the landlord or letting agent even if they hold the supply contract.
- Should biomethane or green gas tariffs be reported differently from standard mains gas?
- Report the physical volume combusted as usual; any renewable gas certificates or green tariffs are typically reflected through the emission factor applied in the platform, not through a change in how you record the activity data itself.

- Gas refers specifically to piped mains natural gas; gaseous fuels covers everything else supplied as a gas, such as LPG, propane, butane and acetylene, which typically arrive by cylinder or bulk tank rather than pipeline.

- Degree-day-adjusted estimates can fill short gaps, but they should be reconciled against actual invoiced or metered volumes as soon as they become available, to avoid compounding estimation error across reporting periods.
